We’ve heard rumors about a new Apple TV for a while, but the company still sells two different Apple TV models, which leads some customers to wonder which one they should buy or whether they should wait for the next generation. Read on as we walk you through what you need to know.
The current lineup
If you’re planning to buy an Apple TV today, you have two options: the Apple TV 4K (5th generation) and the Apple TV HD (4th generation), but neither of them are brand new models.
Apple TV HD was launched in 2015, so we’re talking about a five-year-old model. Although this model still works fine for watching movies and TV shows on Apple TV+, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, or even listening songs on Apple Music, it runs with the A8 chip — the same processor as the iPad Air 2 — and it only supports 1080p content.
Apple TV 4K is the best you can get by now, as it can play 4K HDR videos with Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision support, but this model was released in 2017. This Apple TV is equipped with the A10X Fusion chip, the same used by the 2nd generation iPad Pro. It can handle heavier tasks like gaming, but some people may not want to spend money on a product that no longer has the latest and greatest hardware.
What we know about a new Apple TV
9to5Machas found references to a new Apple TV model in the tvOS 13.4 beta code. The codes reveal a new Apple TV with the codename “T1125”, while the current Apple TV 4K is named “J105a” and the HD model is “J42d”. tvOS internal files suggest the hardware is based on the arm64e architecture, the same used in both A12 and A13 Bionic chips, so we assume the next-generation Apple TV will have the A12 chip at least.
Jumping from the A10X Fusion chip to the A12X Bionic or newer should bring more performance to Apple’s set-top box, especially for playing games, which has been increasingly the company’s focus with the Apple Arcade. Having a new processor also means this Apple TV will last longer in terms of receiving tvOS updates.
Based on a leaked iOS 14 early build obtained by 9to5Mac, we know that Apple is working on a new version of Apple TV remote. The current sleek Siri Remote with a touch surface is considered a downside by some users, so perhaps Apple is reconsidering its design.
We also heard the new Apple TV might get HDMI 2.1 with Auto Low-Latency Mode and increased storage, with 64GB and 128GB options. Currently, both Apple TV 4K and HD are available in 32GB and 64GB models.
Which Apple TV should you buy?
If you want an Apple TV right now, you should go with the Apple TV 4K — which starts at $179. But keep in mind that this model was launched almost three years ago, and a new generation of Apple TV might be announced at any time.
For most people, waiting for the next model may be the best option. This new Apple TV should bring significant advances in performance, which aren’t only crucial for games, but also to keep it updated with the latest apps and features for longer. And even if you’re not planning on buying the newest model, the current Apple TV 4K is likely to become cheaper with the announcement of a new generation.

The only model not recommended is the Apple TV HD. As mentioned before, it can handle streaming apps, but we don’t know for how long Apple will keep it updated since it runs with the A8 chip. Personally, in my experience, this Apple TV is getting slow for some tasks, so be aware of that.

During the WWDC 2020 keynote, Apple announced what's coming this fall for its five different platform operating systems, including Apple TV. tvOS doesn't usually get a complete overhaul, but Apple always makes a few changes that may seem small on the surface, but they're actually big improvements. So what's coming next for the Apple TV's operating system? Read on to find out!
So what are the new features coming in tvOS14?
The biggest changes coming in tvOS 14 involve some under-the-hood updates to improve performance, but we know you're here for the good stuff. Here are the features Apple unveiled at WWDC.
Multi-user Apple Arcade support
One of the biggest problems with multiple profiles in Apple TV is that it doesn't work with Apple Arcade. Today, Apple announced that Apple Arcade is getting an update to allow your different profiles to be saved as separate games. When you switch between profiles, you will see your game progress, Friends list, and more.
Xbox Elite 2 and Xbox Adaptive Controller support
Currently, Apple TV supports Xbox One and PlayStation 4 controllers. In tvOS 14, Xbox Elite 2 will be supported, and even more important, Xbox Adaptive Controllers will be usable on Apple TV. This is an incredible addition to gaming on Apple TV for accessibility,
4K Video sharing in the Photos app
When you're showing off your vacation photos and videos on your Apple TV, you will be able to see those videos in full 4K from your iPhone or iPad via AirPlay with 4K HDR. And if your family wants to send videos to your Apple TV from their device, those will appear in 4K, too. Of course, that's for videos that you've recorded in 4K.
PiP across all content
In tvOS 14, you'll be able to take advantage of Picture-in-Picture whether you're in the Apple TV app or any other app, too. So you can watch the news while working out or keep your TV shows playing while searching for a new home in Zillow. PiP also works with AirPlay.
New HomeKit integration and Home View
In tvOS 14, we'll get full support for viewing HomeKit-enabled camera feeds. Homekit enabled cameras will be integrated with Apple TV and you can see them in the new Home View in Control Center. Home View in Control Center is a pared-down version of the Home app (so, no... there is still no Home app on Apple TV) that lets you access your favorite cameras and scenes that you've marked in the Home app on your iPhone or iPad.
You can also get live view doorbell notifications on your Apple TV for HomeKit supported smart doorbell cameras.
You can also ask Siri on Apple TV to show you the view of one of the cameras and you can take the camera view full-screen on your Apple TV.
AirPods Audio Sharing on Apple TV
When you and your partner are settling in for the night, but you don't want to wake the kids, you will be able to set two pairs of AirPods or AirPods Pro as your audio devices in tvOS 14. You can blast that action flick without waking the baby.
YouTube in 4K
I know, why hasn't this already been an option? But it's finally coming in tvOS 14. You'll be able to watch videos with their full 4K resolution right on your big screen on your 4K (or higher) television set. It's about time.
Why is it called tvOS14?
Apple switched over to the tvOS SDK in 2015. It was previously based on the iOS SDK. In order to keep in line with the original iOS numbering version. So, although tvOS was in its first iteration in 2015, Apple called it tvOS 9. Five years later, we're on the 14th version of an operating system for Apple TV that was built from iOS, which is also about to see its 14th version.
When will I be able to update to tvOS 14?
Apple didn't give us a specific date for the next big update for Apple TV, but we can expect to see it sometime this fall, around the time Apple releases it's other major operating system updates to the public.
How much will it cost me?
Absolutely nothing. Apple stopped charging for software upgrades back with OS X Mavericks. We've never paid for iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, or Apple TV updates.
Will my Apple TV work with tvOS 14?
Almost definitely. As long as your Apple TV runs tvOS, you can update it this fall when it's available to the public. That's any Apple TV prior to 2015.
Apple TV devices from 2014 and earlier run Apple TV Software which uses a channel style content installation system instead of apps. If you're not sure which Apple TV you own, look for an App Store. If you don't have an App Store, you have an older Apple TV that doesn't support tvOS.
How do I get tvOS 14 on my Apple TV?
When the time comes, your Apple TV should prompt you that you have an update available to install, or it may automatically update overnight. If, however, you want to get to the fun stuff fast, you can manually update.
- Open the Settings app on your Apple TV.
- Click on System.
- Click on Software Update.
From here, you'll be able to manually install the tvOS 14 update.
Is there a beta of tvOS 14 I can test?
There is! Because betas are oftentimes unreliable and can be full of bugs and glitches, we highly recommend you only test the beta of tvOS 14 on a secondary Apple TV and not the one you use to watch TV and movies on a daily basis. If you're not ready to install the developer beta, but are looking forward to testing tvOS 14 when the public beta is available, it's coming later this summer.
If you're comfortable with beta testing tvOS 14, we have an entire guide to help you through the process.
